MCCAIN AND GOODE SIGNS TORCHED

October 11, 2008, Charlottesville Virginia—In a shocking display of disregard for political free speech, Obama supporters burned 2 Republican campaign signs overnight. Sometime on Oct. 10 or early on the 11th, a McCain-Palin 4’x8’ sign and a Virgil Goode 4’x8’ sign located in Earlysville were set on fire, leaving nothing but charred posts and a line of ash on the ground.

The Albemarle County Republican Committee received a call from the property owner informing them that their signs had been burned. Chairman Christian Schoenewald responded immediately by calling the Albemarle County Police to file a report. “This is a disturbing turn of events and I’m dismayed at the intolerance and attempted intimidation,” he remarked. Schoenewald continued, “I’m concerned that this new behavior shows an escalation in the desire to intimidate Republican voters. Theft and defacing of signs is one thing. Burning signs elevates the situation to a whole new level.

Albemarle County Police are currently investigating the arson. Albemarle Republicans are urging all citizens to respect each others’ property and freedom of expression during these last few weeks leading up to the election.

The Albemarle County Republican Committee exists to assist in the election of Republican candidates from President on down to the County Board of Supervisors. Their headquarters is located at 455 Albemarle Square. The organization currently shares their headquarters with an official McCain Victory Office and conducts campaign operations 12 hours per day, 7 days per week.
